When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to get outside to ride my bike and play with my friends, but my kids don’t even ask to play outside. They would much rather play a video game online, and who can blame them? Have you seen some of these online games lately? My husband and I our constantly regulating our kids’ screen-time. Gone are the days of just worrying they were watching too much television. However, I finally found something that uses my kids’ love of video games to get them moving, Zamzee!
So, what is Zamzee? Zamzee is an activity meter that measures your kids activity, but it’s also a website that makes moving fun!
How does it work? To play on Zamzee, you need an activity meter. Your child wears the meter, like a pedometer, but it measures more than just steps. This meter tracks all their physical activity including the intensity of their play. They can plug the meter right into the computer, upload their data and earn Pointz for their movement. The more they move, the faster they level up and earn prizes. The game also gives them challenges to earn extra Pointz, but get this, to complete the challenge, they have to get off the computer and complete a physical activity wearing their Zamzee. Sneaky, right? I love it!
So does it work? My son received a Zamzee nearly two months ago, and it definitely has increased his activity level. Even on days that it is raining outside, I’ve found him doing jumping jacks in the kitchen! He wants to wear the Zamzee everywhere so he can earn more Pointz. I won’t let him wear it to school because I’m afraid he will lose it, so he has even tried to convince me to wear it for him during school hours. The website is definitely appealing enough to make him want to spend time there as opposed to another site where he would only sit and play video games. I feared that he may only be interested for a week or so, but nearly two months later, he is still wearing his Zamzee and tracking his activities online!
