I have fallen behind a bit (that seems to be my theme this month, lol) on my reader questions. I have several sitting in my inbox that are so good I want to post about them for everyone, but I’ve discovered answering them one at a time seems to work best!

I chose today’s question because I’ve had quite a few questions cropping up as to how to read the deals posts. In particular the Publix deals, but most of this information can be easily applied to the other store match-ups too. Reading deals posts can be like reading a foreign language. I hope this Q & A helps clear things up!

First let me direct you to the Coupon Lingo and Abbreviations list. This will help you with all the abbreviations like B1G1, Q, RP, etc… Once you have you the hang of those, it can still be a little confusing to read the actual deal.

Today I received this question from a reader:

Can you please help me understand this – I can’t figure out how it gets to be .14 each.

Uncle Ben’s Rice, 14 or 15.8 oz box, $2.29
$1/1 RP 5/16
$1/2 Printable
$.75/2 Printable
:: $.14 each

This Uncle Ben’s Deal is from this week’s Publix list and it is listed under “Buy One Get One Deals for Less Than $1″

Let’s break this deal down:

1.  The Item – Uncle Ben’s Rice, 14 or 15.8 oz box, $2.29

This is the price for one Uncle Ben’s Rice based on my area. This item is buy one get one free so you will get two for $2.29, in other words $1.14 each.

2. The Coupons – Under the item, I have listed three different coupons. You can only use one of these unless otherwise noted. The best coupon is the $1/1 RP 5/16, but I list everything available in case you don’t have the highest value coupon.

3. The Price – The final price is listed as $.14 each. I often get asked, where did I get that number?
Here’s the Math:

  • Buy two items at 2 for $2.29.
  • Use two $1/1 coupons from RP 5/16 (Publix allows you to use coupons on both the item you pay for and the free item!)
  • Pay $.29 for both after coupons, in other words about $.14 each!

Note: If you don’t have the highest value coupon, then adjust your total accordingly.

I hope this helps! If you have more questions regarding this topic, please leave them here and one of our other readers or I will likely be able to answer them.

OK…Let me see if I understand this. You have a 2 – $1.00 Q’s. The Q says $1.00 off 2 boxes of rice. So I can use 2 Q’s and only get 2 boxes of rice? I thought I could only use one Q when it says off of 2. Does that make since? Is that what you’re saying?….Thanks Cindi

You can only use one coupon if you were to use the $1/2, but the best coupon listed $1/1, so you can use two of those if you have that coupon.
